Premium Choice Tour #1 - The Big Easy City Tour - Embarkation Day

This tour departs from your pre-voyage hotel. You may bring your carry-on luggage with you. We encourage you to dine prior to boarding the steamcoach as time is not allotted for lunch during the tour.

Join us for an adventure to see New Orleans from the eyes of the locals. A licensed local tour guide will escort the American Queen’s guests on an historic tour of New Orleans. Enjoy hearing the history of New Orleans including the first settlers, religion, culture, and of course, Mardi Gras. The day will include a driving tour and views of the French Quarter, Jackson Square, and the Garden District, with elegantly built mansions in Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne Victorian styles. Then, visit St. Charles Avenue along the famous street car line boasting two of the most prestigious colleges in New Orleans: Tulane University and Loyola University.

The Steamcoach will pass by the Audubon Park, a 400-acre park located in uptown New Orleans between St. Charles Avenue and the Mississippi River, built on the site of the 1884 World’s Fair. City Park is another area you will enjoy; at 1,300 acres, it is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. The first parcel of land was acquired in 1854, making it one of the country’s oldest parks. City Park will be one of the rest stops to grab a coffee or bask in the beauty of the park.

The last stop will be an above-ground cemetery known as “The City of the Dead”. As the tour concludes, the steamcoach will then take you to the American Queen to embark on your voyage.

Chester

Day 12: Chester, IL

Arrival: 12:00 p.m. — Departure: 5:00 p.m.

Samuel Smith built the first home in Chester, established a ferry system, and began the construction of a mill in 1829. He is said to be the town's founder. It was his wife Jane Thomas, a native of Chester, England, who gave Chester its name as a tribute to her home town. The Chester area includes a number of state parks and historic sites. The Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site has a beautiful overlook of the Mississippi River. Down the hill from the park is the Pierre Menard Home, an unusually fine example of French Creole-style architecture, which was built around 1815 and was the home of the first lieutenant governor of Illinois. Across the river from the fort is Kaskaskia Island, the only part of Illinois west of the current channel of the Mississippi River. The island was the site of the first state capital of Illinois. A historic church founded by French explorer Pere Jacques Marquette still holds weekly mass on the island. The Liberty Bell of the West, older than the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, is located near the church on the island and was a gift from King Louis XV of France.

Great Steamboat Era

Steamboats on the Mississippi benefited from technological and political changes. The US bought the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803, and was then free to expand westward out of the Ohio valley and into the Great Plains and the Southwest. The success of the Charlotte Dundas in Scotland in 1801 and Robert Fulton's Clermont on the Hudson River in 1807 proved the concept of the steamboat. Join us as we explore what happened next and enjoy historians and performances that bring the Golden Age of Steamboats to life.
