Premium Choice Tour #1 - The Underground Railroad Tour

Just a short drive from Maysville is Washington, a circa 1700s village of shops, museums, tours and fine Kentucky dining. Washington was established in 1786 by the Virginia legislature, six years before Kentucky became a state. By 1790 it had grown to 119 log cabins, the second-largest town in Kentucky. After separation from Bourbon County in 1788, Washington became the seat of Mason County, which included nearly one-fourth of the area of Kentucky.

Reputedly, this was the first town named for George Washington. In 1797, it was a glowing center of education and fashion. There were 20 flourishing mercantile houses, two taverns (inns), 10 mechanics’ shops, three rope walks, and three churches.
We follow the footsteps of the slave and visit:

- Paxton Inn (with hidden stairway to hide runaway slaves)
- Harriet Beecher Stowe Slavery to Freedom Museum: The museum is an early antebellum home where Stowe, the author of “Uncle Tom's Cabin,” visited and witnessed a slave auction in 1833. This brick townhouse is one of the finest historic structures in Washington, distinguished by a handsome Georgian-styled frontispiece and an elegant Federal interior stairway. The museum retains its original woodworking, mantels, doors, floors and chair railings.
- National Underground Railroad Museum: The first nationally established museum, since 1995, dedicated to study, chronicle and celebrate the Underground Railroad movement in the nation and the world.
- Albert Sidney Johnston Home
- Courthouse Front Lawn: Where slave auctions were held. The original limestone building was erected in 1793 by Lewis Craig.

Visit the Mansion House, erected in 1796 as a tavern and now preserved as a museum with displays of period antiques and heirlooms.

Interested in improving your cooking skills, learning a new technique or just having a fun morning with your new American Queen friends? We have teamed up with The Cook’s Shop to bring in a famous founder of a local product! Don’t miss this hands-on learning experience.

You don’t have to go to a cooking school in Florence to learn how to make great pasta! John Rossi, founder of Rossi Pasta, will teach you the secrets of handmade pasta during an intimate class session at The Cook’s Shop. Using seasonal, fresh ingredients for flavoring, John will take you through the steps of creating pasta dough, rolling, cutting and making hand-rolled ravioli. Learn to make a homemade ricotta filling and a cream- or tomato-based sauce. You’ll also learn to make quick and delicious Italian yeast bread in a food processor.

A few members of each class will be invited up to help John in the process of making the pasta. Everyone will sample the ravioli and bread, and recipes will be provided to all participants. John will be assisted by Gayle Shank, sous chef and director of The Cook’s Shop cooking school. As a bonus, we’ll include a sample of wine from Marietta Wine Cellars, Marietta’s local winery. Class is limited to 20 participants. All class participants will be extended a 10% discount on any purchases made in The Cook’s Shop on the day of the class.

After the class, visit John’s art gallery on Front St. to get a personal look at his extraordinary art. Next to John’s gallery is Rossi Pasta’s Factory Store, where you can stock up on your favorite pasta before leaving Marietta.

Baseball Legends
America’s pastime and the Boys of Summer are part of our national identity. Imagine the wooden bleachers, the pennants snapping in the wind, peanuts in the shell, wooden bats, woolen uniforms and iron men. Hark back to the days when the exploits of Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Jackie Robinson were front page news. You’ll be joined by some of today’s living legends for a vacation that’s sure to be a home run.

Music of the Rivers
The paddlewheel has its own rhythm but so does the music of the rivers as we float through the myriad melodies of blues, gospel, folk, rockabilly, ragtime, Dixieland jazz and zydeco. Sway to the music of Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton and try your hand at that quintessential river instrument, the calliope. You’ll quickly discover that the river has a rhythm all its own.
